Artificial Intelligence continues to dominate boardroom discussions and technology strategies, but while organisations focus on AI adoption, another significant shift is quietly gathering pace. For the telecommunications sector in particular, the conversation around quantum-safe communications is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore ...

Quantum security is a crucial concern that must not be overlooked, even amidst the buzz surrounding AI

For many years, quantum computing has been viewed as a future challenge rather than an immediate concern. However, recent announcements suggest that the timeline may be shortening. Microsoft has accelerated its Quantum Safe Programme, stating that advances in quantum research have shifted the risk horizon.

Organisations should begin preparing for post-quantum
cryptography (PQC) sooner rather than later!

The technology giant now aims to transition its critical products and services to PQC by 2029, reflecting growing confidence that cryptographically relevant quantum computers could arrive earlier than previously expected.

The concern centres on what is often called 'Q-Day' – the point at which quantum computers become powerful enough to break many of today's widely used public-key encryption methods.

Whilst that day has not yet arrived, the threat isn't limited to the future. Cyber criminals can already steal encrypted information today with the intention of decrypting it once quantum computing capabilities become available, a tactic known as 'harvest now, decrypt later'.

This is why governments and technology providers are encouraging organisations to start planning now rather than waiting until quantum computing becomes mainstream.

Migrating to post-quantum cryptography is not a simple software update. It requires organisations to identify where cryptography is used across their infrastructure, assess risks and gradually transition to quantum-resistant algorithms over several years.

For the telecommunications industry, this
is particularly important!

Telecoms networks underpin critical national infrastructure, financial services, healthcare, emergency communications and countless business operations. Protecting these networks against future threats requires long-term planning, not reactive decision-making.

AI will undoubtedly continue to transform the telecoms sector, but it should not overshadow another technological shift that could fundamentally reshape cybersecurity. Organisations that begin preparing for a post-quantum future today will be in a far stronger position when Q-Day eventually arrives.

In cybersecurity, as in so many areas of technology, waiting until the threat becomes immediate is rarely the best strategy.

Until next time ...

About Pritesh Ganatra ...

Pritesh Ganatra

The word 'Technology' has too many connotations in today's world! Where do we start? Simple terms like 'IT' and 'Telecoms'? or terms that appear NOT to have an actual meaning at all!, e.g. 'Internet of Things (IoT). Technology also encompasses specialist products and services like 'Rugged' and 'Tough' android devices, Lone Worker Software, panic alarm devices, smart energy devices, low energy lighting, credit card terminal (PCI DSS) security, indoor/ outdoor Wi-Fi systems, Ultrafast Gigabit internet connectivity, access control systems, industrial IoT circuit controllers.

BTS UK can consult from simple solutions to the most complex, provide some of the products through a wholesale channel, bring together a multi-disciplined 'Task Force' to deliver and implement complete Technology 'projects'.

I am your technology problem solver and I look forward to helping you.
