Artificial intelligence is advancing at an extraordinary pace, but are we moving too quickly to understand the risks? Recent reports of AI systems bypassing security restrictions and cyberattacks affecting connected equipment raise an uncomfortable question: do we now need AI monitoring AI to keep increasingly autonomous technology under control?

AI monitoring AI could help keep autonomous systems under control, but do we really need digital police?

AI monitoring AI could help keep autonomous systems under control, but do we really need digital police?"

Reports of AI agents escaping their intended digital sandboxes during security testing highlight the challenge of containing sophisticated systems. These incidents don't necessarily mean artificial intelligence is becoming deliberately malicious, but they demonstrate how unexpected behaviour can expose weaknesses in even carefully designed safeguards.

For technology companies investing heavily
in AI, that's a serious concern!

Meanwhile, reports of cybercriminals manipulating internet-connected refrigeration systems in French supermarkets illustrate another vulnerability. By interfering with temperature controls, attackers reportedly caused significant food losses.

Whether artificial intelligence played any role remains unconfirmed, but the incident highlights the potential consequences of connecting essential equipment to digital networks.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed how businesses operate. From refrigeration and manufacturing to building management and logistics, connected devices offer efficiency, convenience and remote monitoring.

However, every connected system potentially introduces another point of vulnerability. Even equipment running on specialist control platforms may be exposed if attackers find weaknesses in its software, configuration, or network security.

Could AI itself help solve the problem?

The concept of AI monitoring AI is increasingly relevant. Specialist monitoring systems could identify unusual activity, detect potential security breaches and alert human operators before problems escalate. In principle, these digital police officers could work continuously, responding to warning signs far faster than traditional monitoring methods.

But monitoring and control are different. Giving one autonomous AI system unrestricted authority over another could introduce further risks.

Any AI security monitoring system should operate within clearly defined parameters, maintain transparent records and report significant concerns to human decision-makers. Human oversight must remain central, particularly where physical infrastructure or public safety is involved.

I'm certainly not suggesting that intelligent machines
are about to declare war on humanity!

That's still firmly in science-fiction territory. Nevertheless, the speed of technological development should prompt us to ask whether security, regulation, and accountability are keeping pace.

Perhaps the answer isn't to disconnect everything and start again, tempting though that might sometimes seem. Instead, we need to build stronger safeguards into connected technology from the outset.

AI monitoring AI could become an essential part of modern cybersecurity, but the ultimate responsibility must remain with us humans.

Until next time ...

About Pritesh Ganatra ...

Pritesh Ganatra

The word 'Technology' has too many connotations in today's world! Where do we start? Simple terms like 'IT' and 'Telecoms'? or terms that appear NOT to have an actual meaning at all!, e.g. 'Internet of Things (IoT). Technology also encompasses specialist products and services like 'Rugged' and 'Tough' android devices, Lone Worker Software, panic alarm devices, smart energy devices, low energy lighting, credit card terminal (PCI DSS) security, indoor/ outdoor Wi-Fi systems, Ultrafast Gigabit internet connectivity, access control systems, industrial IoT circuit controllers.

BTS UK can consult from simple solutions to the most complex, provide some of the products through a wholesale channel, bring together a multi-disciplined 'Task Force' to deliver and implement complete Technology 'projects'.

I am your technology problem solver and I look forward to helping you.
