The recent electricity outage affecting Spain and Portugal serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our modern systems. While many scoffed at the chaos resulting from traffic lights ceasing to function, it prompts a deeper question: why aren't schools and parents teaching children Basic Survival Skills?

Self-reliance has dwindled, leading to a dependency
that many fear could be disastrous!

Gone are the days when children learned to navigate the world without the crutch of smartphones or online banking. In the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, individuals managed their daily lives without instant access to information at their fingertips. They used maps instead of GPS, communicated face-to-face rather than through screens, and relied on their innate problem-solving abilities.

Today, however, with the introduction of 5G networks and the ever-evolving devices that accompany them, modern society seems to have forgotten the essence of self-sufficiency. The question remains: how sustainable is this dependency?

Schools are at the forefront of moulding young minds for the future. Yet, the curriculum often neglects fundamental skills such as gardening, cooking, and first aid. In a thriving society, knowing how to grow one's own food or perform basic medical assistance can be as vital as mastering a subject like mathematics.

A healthy community is built on self-reliance, yet children today are increasingly conditioned to believe that technology will provide every answer. The irony of the wealthiest individuals, like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, capitalising on this dependency while advocating for advanced technology isn't lost on those observing from afar.

  • To address this concerning trend, it isn't enough to merely highlight the importance of basic survival skills; action must follow. Schools should integrate practical classesthat teach children how to forage, maintain a small garden, cook from scratch, and perform basic home repairs.
  • These lessons can be supplemented by community initiatives that bring together families and promote a return to the values of cooperation and mutual aid that once defined society. Rebuilding community spirit goes hand in hand with instilling resilience in our children.

Time is of the essence; as we've seen, technology can fail, and society must be prepared for such eventualities. Empowering children with basic survival skills offers them not only practical abilities, but also a sense of confidence and resilience that transcends the digital age.

As the world grows more unpredictable, it is crucial that the next generation is equipped with the tools to thrive independently. The focus must shift from a mere reliance on technology to understanding and appreciating the skills that promote personal and communal survival.

The alarming decline in basic survival skills in our
education systems is a pressing issue!

With a conscious effort from educators and parents, it is possible to cultivate a generation that values self-reliance and community strength. By doing so, they will be better prepared for an uncertain future where the technology they depend on may not always be available.
