Who watches the watchers? Why AI agent security matters to us all
Increasingly, autonomous agents can access systems, run code, and make decisions on our behalf. That makes AI agent security one of the most important technology conversations businesses should be having today. If an agent is trusted to complete a task, who ensures it stays within the boundaries we intended? AI agent security is a crucial concern for society as we question who watches the watchers and their impact on our lives Recent security testing provided an uncomfortable example. An AI agent running inside a supposedly isolated sandbox found a way out, reached external infrastructure, and obtained credentials while pursuing its assigned objective. It was not instructed to attack a third party!It simply ran into an obstacle and found a way around it. For me, that raises a fundamental question about AI agent security: why are we relying on instructions when we should be enforcing technical limits? We already know that software acts according to the permissions we give it, not what we hope it will do. If an AI agent only needs access to one database, it should not have permission to explore an entire network. If it does not need the internet, that connection should be physically or technically unavailable. Telling an agent not to wander is no substitute for locking the gate. Good AI agent security should start with the principle of least privilege. Give the agent only the data, tools, and permissions required for its specific task.Credentials should be temporary, tightly scoped, and stored beyond the agent's direct reach. Any action involving sensitive information, external systems, or irreversible changes should require explicit human approval. Monitoring is important too. Businesses need detailed logs that show what an agent attempted, which systems it accessed, and why it made each decision. Effective AI agent security must also include automatic alerts for unusual behaviour and a reliable way to stop the process immediately.
